Jessica Barnhart Stackhouse

Jess is a children’s book author, proud mother, loving wife, and Deputy Clerk for her local court.

She is a proud alumna of Norfolk Academy and Bridgewater College where she pursued a bachelor’s in Early and Elementary Education. She is currently furthering her education by studying for a Certificate in Paralegal Studies. Driven by a fascination with the law and guided by years of courtroom experience, Jess is passionate about the procedural nuances of our court system and the real-world effects that laws have within their communities.

Jess aims to provide children of all ages with an introductory lesson in legalese, distilling complex terminology and ideas into fun and educational storylines. She believes that reading together is a great way to help kids broaden their knowledge while building creativity and nurturing an inquiring mindset.

In her free time, you can find Jess stuck like glue to her daughter and husband - attending the AwesomeCon convention, the Maryland Renaissance Faire, a performance at the Kennedy Center, or simply having a Saturday adventure to the park. Her daughter loves crafting and dancing, her husband loves spicy foods and football, and Jess loves music and reading about the solar system with her little lady before bed.

The Creative Process

Each Page a Journey

It all begins with an idea. While writing the manuscripts for the books in Stack’s Law Library, Jess also has a clear vision of the illustrations she would like to share with readers. She meticulously sketches what she calls ‘storyboards’ for each page of her books. Sometimes Jess sketches a scene in black and white and merely notates items of import to the scene. Other times, Jess draws and colors an entirely detailed illustration in to be used as the guide for a particular page.

These storyboards are sent in batches to her wonderful illustrating partner, Nabeel Hayder, who does a beautiful job bringing her ideas to life!

Below are some examples of Jess’s storyboards and the illustrations they helped Nabeel create! Enjoy~
